Pursuant to the decree of the President of the Council of Ministers dated 3 November 2020, containing urgent measures to contain the Covid-19 contagion, starting from 5 November 2020 guided visits to the Castellana Caves are temporarily suspended.
The new closure for the karst site, following the March-to-May closure, comes after a summer that surprisingly saw visitor numbers far exceed expectations, confirming the Castellana Caves as one of Puglia's top paid tourist attractions. It also follows a promising autumn start, during which the tourist site, in keeping with seasonal trends, also offered exploration activities such as the special Speleonight and Speleofamily visits, which enriched the guided tour schedule.
“As already happened in March, we are forced to close the doors to our underground world. – commented the president Victor Casulli, who together with the vice president Francesco Manghisi and to the councillor Maria Lacasella makes up the Board of Directors of the Castellana Caves srl Thanks to the invaluable commitment of our staff, we overcame a very challenging season, with nearly 100 visitors in the three months from July to September. This collective success allowed us to secure the Castellana Caves Society and will allow us to weather this long winter with peace of mind, both financially and economically. We hope to soon reopen this priceless treasure to the public!
