Limit: a boundary not to be crossed or a goal to aspire to? A question that has tormented humanity for centuries and is at the heart of the reflections of some of history's greatest philosophers. With a doubt that remains unresolved.: what goes beyond the limit can be sustainable? This will be the starting point of the Lecture "Man and Nature: Our Limits", which will be held by the philosopher Remo Bodei, second guest of the review "Episodes", Thursday 6 April at 19.30 inside the Castellana Caves. The philosopher will be introduced by Michele Partipilo, editor-in-chief of the “Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno”.
The master lecture
At 70 meters deep, in the suggestive scenario of the “Grave”, Bodei will trace a path through centuries of philosophy, developing what is The common thread of the fourth edition of the event organized by Libro Possibile: sustainability.
Starting from his latest essay, “Limite”, the Sardinian philosopher will go to disturb the great thinkers of history, from Plato to modern nihilism, passing through Machiavelli, Hobbes, Nietzsche and Bataille. However, if we want to find a 'turning point' in the perception of limits in history, for Bodei we must get to the scientific revolution between the 16th and 17th centuriesIt is the moment in which the universe no longer appears as an emanation of the will of the gods, but "a book written in mathematical characters", as Galileo theorized.
It will then be religion itself that will give another hard blow to the idea of limits.: with the Protestant Reformation and the questioning of the Church as the bearer of the 'absolute truth', the limit will no longer be based on authority. It will thus transform into a mobile border, "thereby becoming – as Bodei writes – invariably temporary, it moves with the subjects like the horizon, it closes to open, it is made to be surmounted".
“In contemporary society, where technology gives a sense of omnipotence,” said the artistic director of Libro Possibile, Rosella Santoro, “the sense of limitation seems to be fading, thus nullifying questions about the sustainability of every choice and every action.”
Thursday April 6th Remo Bodei will also be a guest of the Book Possible Coffee since Castle di ConversanoThe Sardinian philosopher will present at 17.30 his latest essay, "Limit", together with the university professor Annalisa CaputoIn the book, Bodei explores the concept of boundaries, debating the possible existence of impassable boundaries between biology, morality, religion, sex, and the environment.
The author
Remo Bodei (Cagliari, 1938) He taught History of Philosophy at the University of Pisa, studied and taught at various European and American universities, and currently teaches philosophy at UCLA in Los Angeles.. Among his works, translated into several languages: Scomposizioni (1987), Ordo amoris (1991), Le forme del bellezza (1995), La filosofia del 20cento (1997), Il noi diviso (1998), Le logico del delirio (2000), La vita delle cose (2009). Limite (Il Mulino, “Parole Controtempo” series) is his latest essay.
