Castellana Grotte, February 7, 2017 – Over seventy representatives of the Italian Speleological Society met and exchanged views last Saturday, February 4, at the Castellana Caves to participate in an Extraordinary Assembly. Grotte di Castellana srl, led by President Domi Ciliberti, and the Puglia Grotte Association organized the event, hosting leading representatives of national speleology who had come to the heart of Puglia from all over Italy. From Sardinia to Tuscany, passing through Abruzzo, Basilicata, and Campania, speleologists responded favorably to the appeal launched by the Altamura president of the SSI, Vincenzo Martimucci. Also present at the assembly was Mario Verole, vice president of the Italian Tourist Caves Association, which includes the Castellana karst site.
The assembly approved the statutory changes requested by the Ministry of the Environment to allow the Italian Speleological Society to continue its commitment to environmental protection. Members have therefore agreed to meet at the next ordinary assembly, scheduled for the end of April in Casola Valsenio, Emilia Romagna.
On Saturday afternoon, the Franco Anelli Speleological Museum in the Castellana Caves also hosted the meeting of the Regional Executive Committee of the SSI Speleology Schools, which finalized the 2017 program.
After discussing technical aspects, Sunday morning was dedicated to exploring the underground treasures. Representatives of the SSI Board of Directors took a special tour of the Castellana Caves and, following the tourist trail, finally reached the resplendent White Cave. The perfect way to conclude a weekend dedicated to speleology.
