Questioning everything we think we know about past events, to give a new interpretation of the present. "Demolishing" myths and beliefs of history will be Friday 24 March at 19.30 pm the historian Paolo Mieli, first guest of the review "Episodes”, organized by The Possible Book inside the Castellana Caves.
The appointment
Paolo Mieli will descend to a depth of over 50 metres, inside the “Grave”, to keep a keynote, by title "Learning from the past”, introduced by the editor-in-chief of Tgr Puglia Atilius RomitaStarting from his latest essay, “At War with the Past,” the historian will offer an original reflection on the central theme of Episodes: sustainability, declined as the limit that has often been interpreted by history.
The idea of limit today is borrowed from the ancients: We already find the line of demarcation between good and evil in the Christian and Jewish religions that man must be careful not to overcome, but also the metaphor of the "Tower of Babel," which represents the division between peoples and languages. A concept that returns in Greek culture, where the limit is the imposition of not challenging the will of the gods, under penalty of being punished for their own “hybris”, the arrogance.
Past and present are intertwined in Paolo Mieli's writing, which will try to provide an alternative vision to the history learned at school. To be “sustainable” The past should not be analyzed with pre-established cages, but investigated by reviewing everything one believes in. And this is precisely the objective of the historian, who with the use of documents will allow readers to "learn from the past" and, consequently, look at the present differently. The public will thus discover that even the so-called "good" have committed reprehensible acts, subverting some of the historical legacies by which we tend to judge current events.
The author
Journalist and historian, a student of Renzo De Felice and Rosario Romeo in the 1970s, Paolo Mieli was a journalist at “Espresso”, then at “Repubblica” and “La Stampa”, which he also directedFrom 1992 to 1997 and from 2004 to 2009 he directed the "Corriere della Sera". Among his historical essays we can mention “Stories, History” (1999), “History and Politics” (2001), “The Chinese Drop” (2002), “Coming to terms with History” (2013) and “The Weapon of Memory” (2015).
