Grotte di Castellana Srl is pleased to announce one of the most spectacular and evocative events dedicated to Christmas ever organised in the history of the Caves, a unique and evocative event that will involve hundreds of people, sponsored by the Municipality of Castellana Grotte,
December 23rd at 7:00 PM A long torchlight procession will depart from the Mother Church, located in the heart of the town, in Largo San Leone Magno, and will follow the statue of Baby Jesus, placed on a donkey-drawn cart and flanked by bagpipers, musicians, faithful, and children with balloons dedicated to peace, to the entrance of the Castellana Caves.
Upon arrival at the Anelli square, expert speleologist Sergio Carpinelli will abseil down seventy meters from the mouth of the Grave with the precious statue until he reaches the stunning nativity scene, with its one-meter-and-seventy-meter-tall figures set up at the bottom of the cave, placing Baby Jesus at the center of the Nativity scene.
The entire event will be accompanied by the singing of the historic Schola Cantorum "Don Vincenzo Vitti" choir, composed of over fifty members and directed by Maestro Vittorio Petruzzi, and by hundreds of lit candles that will illuminate the stunning setting of the Grave, creating a unique and unforgettable atmosphere. This moving moment will culminate with Holy Mass officiated by Archpriest Don Leonardo Mastronardi and enhanced by the choir's singing.
Finally, the unmissable opportunity to visit the Nativity scene made entirely from waste materials Installed in the Caverna dei Monumenti, this artwork, conceived and created by Marino De Tommaso and Rosaria Genco for the Compagnia degli Scarti in collaboration with Giuseppe Dicarlo, Francesco Rizzi, Giulio Manelli, Rosa Manghisi, Gianleo Buzzerio, and the Lacasella Company of Castellana, ARCAL of Castellana Grotte, will be illuminated by twenty-two spotlights symbolizing the countries currently at war. A powerful message of peace extending from the Castellana Caves to the entire world.
