An exciting appointment at seventy meters depth
In the incomparable setting of the CASTELLANA CAVES

CLAUDIO BAGLIONI is the fourth big name in Italian music to perform at “NATALE NELLE GROTTE,” one of the most evocative Christmas events ever organized inside the Caves, which will take place from December 1, 2015, to January 12, 2016, in the incredible setting of the Castellana Caves.
In LA GRAVE, the first of the caves you encounter when immersing yourself in the complex of underground cavities, an ideal location for live performances with its acoustics that allow for very special musical performances, three leading names in Italian music will perform: EUGENIO FINARDI (December 12) with “DAL PROFONDO”, a unique show conceived exclusively for the Castellana Caves; CLAUDIO BAGLIONI (December 18) with “PER INCANTO E PER AMORE”, a collection of songs specifically designed for the special context that will host the performance; SIMONE CRISTICCHI (January 3) with the show “VIAGGI E STORIE DI UN FABBRICANTE DI CANZONI”, a journey into the almost boundless repertoire of an inimitable artist; STEFANO BOLLANI (January 8) with the unpredictable “ARRIVANO GLI ALIENI”, in which the maestro also tries his hand at singing and writing lyrics for the first time. The four artists' concerts are part of a packed calendar of musical and religious events, under the artistic direction of EUGENIO FINARDI himself, and with artistic direction from PINO SAVINO (artistic director of Grotte di Castellana Srl), which will take place at the Castellana Caves for over a month. "I have always had the utmost respect for Claudio," says Eugenio Finardi, "as a true musician and singer-songwriter with an authentic Italian inspiration, capable of expressing human feelings with sensitivity and precision, touching listeners' hearts. I chose to involve him so that, this time, he could be moved and inspire others with a show in the heart of the earth."
"When we shared our project with Maestro Finardi this summer," explains Domi Ciliberti, president of Grotte di Castellana Srl, "we found ourselves in the presence of a person of great artistic and human depth. His remarkable sensitivity, combined with his lifelong affection for our beloved Caves, meant that our meeting blossomed into a collaboration that, I dare say, was entirely natural. Having an artist like Maestro Finardi as Artistic Director of Christmas in the Caves, along with the pleasure of enjoying the performance he will give at the opening of the events calendar, makes us particularly proud. Thanks to his commitment and passion, this year we will be delighted to host renowned artists such as Claudio Baglioni, Stefano Bollani, and Simone Cristicchi. We are confident that their performances will enchant audiences with their top-notch pieces and lyrics. The Grave's setting will, in itself, welcome their music, making it sublime, a sounding board of unparalleled value and an evocative stage unlike any other. Performing in a natural setting that is nearly one hundred million years old is unparalleled in terms of spirituality.
The Castellana Caves, whose artistic director is Pino Savino, are a complex of underground karst cavities of considerable tourist interest, among the most beautiful and spectacular in Italy. They are located in the municipality of Castellana-Grotte, approximately 1,5 km from the town. They extend for 3348 meters and reach a maximum depth of 122 meters below the surface. The internal temperature hovers around 16,5°C. Located at the gateway to the Itria Valley, a few kilometers from charming villages such as Alberobello, Cisternino, and Polignano a Mare, the Castellana Caves open in the southeastern Murge—at 330 meters above sea level—on a limestone plateau formed during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately ninety to one hundred million years ago. The beauty of the Castellana Caves draws visitors from around the world, and since they opened to the public, more than 15 million people have explored their underground passages. The tour of the caves extends along a 3-kilometer trail: an extraordinary guided excursion, approximately 70 meters underground, in a breathtaking setting where caverns with fantastic names, canyons, deep chasms, fossils, stalactites, stalagmites, and concretions with incredible shapes and astonishing colors spark the imagination of children and adults alike. The Castellana Caves are, therefore, an unmissable opportunity to admire one of the most astonishing natural sites in wonderful Puglia.
