With the "Episodes" review, culture returns
in the Castellana Caves
Mieli, Bodei, and the Fabi-Tozzi duo are guests at the 2017 edition.

Culture meets the breathtaking beauty of the Castellana CavesThe Apulian karst site once again hosts the exhibition “Episodes”, a series of literary presentations organized by the Possible Book in the spring. The appointments will be held, in the “Grave”, the chasm at the entrance to the caves, where the enchantment of stalactites and stalagmites, sculpted over the centuries by nature, reigns supreme.
The theme of sustainability
The common thread of the 2017 edition – the fourth – of the show will be sustainabilityA theme that will be explored through history, philosophy, art and environment, to be able to grasp all its facets and evolution in human thought. The idea fits naturally into the concept of “Limes”, the limit, which has always been present in the ancient cultures and especially in religionJust think of the Judeo-Christian tradition, which is based on the boundary between good and evil, that limit that Adam and Eve crossed by breaking the divine prohibition, as soon as they ate the forbidden fruit.
There is no shortage of references to the theme in Greek culture: think of the concept of humanity represented as a "split apple" in Plato's Symposium, or the “Hybris”, or arrogance of the man who claims to compare himself to the divine, overcoming the limit that has been imposed on him. And so, in a path that also passes through Galileo, Machiavelli and Wells, we come to talk about sustainability and limits even today, with references to nihilistic philosophy.
“Reflecting on the limits – explains the artistic director of Libro Possibile, Rosella Santoro – trying to distinguish them and reaffirm the validity of some, as well as questioning our desires, goals, and spaces of freedom are among the most urgent challenges. In this year's review we will try to discuss ethical and environmental sustainability, looking back at the past".
The events on the bill
The three unmissable events are based precisely on sustainability of the 2017 edition of the festival. The first guest will be the historian and journalist Paolo Mieli, who March 24th at 19.30pm, starting from his latest essay “At war with the past”, he will hold a lecture entitled "Learning from the Past"Mieli will introduce the concept of "sustainable history," one that isn't "caged" by preconceptions and oversimplifications, but instead continually rereads past events, questioning them to analyze the present with a more critical eye.
From history to philosophy, with the keynote di Remo Bodei, Entitled “Man and Nature: Our Limits”, scheduled for the April 6th, always at 7:30 pmStarting from his latest essay, “Limit”, the philosopher will discuss the ethical aspect of sustainability, explaining how the concept of borders has evolved throughout history. For humans, in fact, what once represented a prohibition—the Greek "Hybris"—has become a challenge today: the limit fascinates because it represents the unknown. "It thus becomes," writes Bodei, "inevitably temporary, shifting with its subjects like the horizon, closing in order to open, made to be surmounted."
The review closes with a novelty: to go down in the "Grave" on April 28th, at 19.30 pm, there will be a duo that combines music and science in the name of sustainability. Let's talk about the musician Niccolò Fabi and the essayist – as well as a member of the WWF scientific council – Mario Tozzi, who will present the “Sustainable Music” show. An appointment that invites you to reflect and investigates the complex relationship between man and nature With the help of music and news: in the show, Fabi performs unreleased songs, which are complemented by Tozzi's scientific commentaries on the ecosystem, the fate of our species, and that of our planet.

The “Episodes” review will support the project BNL for Telethon, donating all ticket proceeds to research projects on rare genetic diseases Telethon Foundation. A choice that fits perfectly with the philosophy of the Possible Book and the Castellana Caves, which has always been they organize cultural initiatives with charitable implications.
