State television NHK delves into the underground world of Castellana to uncover its mysteries and anecdotes.
Castellana Grotte, February 10, 2015 – The Japanese crew sent by the NHK broadcaster, comparable to RAI1 in Italy, remained in the cave for more than five hours to film the marvelous concretions of the Castellana underground site and discover its mysteries and anecdotes.
The program will air in Japan at the end of March and will have a documentary feel, focusing on the beauty of Puglia, the history of its people, its culture and traditions, all enriched by the nature and gastronomy for which our region is renowned worldwide. A travelogue that will begin on the Puglia coast and end at the Castellana Caves, the goal, among other things, is to highlight, to the over 10 million Japanese viewers who will watch the show, the sociable nature of the Apulians, a warm and outgoing, welcoming and creative people. "Their colloquial attitude, the desire for physical contact in greetings and our gestures are very distant from Japanese philosophy," explained interpreter and coordinator Luisella Palladino, "since they are very reserved and introverted. Precisely for this reason, director Katayama Tomoji, in addition to the wonders of the place, wanted to highlight this characteristic trait of Italians, certainly much admired in the Eastern world."
Speleologist Sergio Carpinelli, accompanied by guide Francesco Cisternino, led the director, the actor, the three camera operators, and the four extras along the three-kilometer underground route. Carpinelli spent a long time recounting the history of the Caves, the legends, beliefs, and the many anecdotes that captivated the entire group, already enraptured by the marvelous scenery.
