NATIONAL SPELEOLOGY DAY AT THE CASTELLANA CAVES
On October 3rd and 4th, you will have the opportunity to learn about and approach speleology, guided by experts from the Puglia Grotte Group and the Vespertilio Speleological Group.
Castellana Caves, October 2, 2015 – On Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, 2015, the Italian Speleological Society, a free association of and for speleologists, is promoting National Speleology Day, with the aim of giving greater visibility to the exploration and study of underground voids.
The event, sponsored by the Italian Tourist Cave Association (AGTI), is based on the idea that promotion can help safeguard underground caves and promote speleology, understood as a discipline of knowledge and a conscious means of traveling in the underground world.
"Tourist caves," commented Giampaolo Pinto, speleologist and event coordinator, "constitute a concrete connection between the underground world and modern man; the organization and layout of the hypogea truly allow anyone to experience and observe the subterranean nature, the architecture of a contrasting environment where, beneath a rocky sky, the void is as important as the water that carved it, and darkness and silence are the predominant elements that mark the slow but incessant passage of time."
On Saturday, October 3rd, from 5:00 PM, the Franco Anelli Museum will host a one-hour lecture on karst, led by expert geologists from the Puglia Grotte Group and the Vespertilio Speleological Group – CAI Bari. The lecture is open to anyone wishing to explore the underground world through a scientific approach. On Sunday, October 4th, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the two organizing groups will entertain visitors following their guided tours of the Castellana Caves, as well as anyone who wishes to participate, with a fifteen-minute in-depth lecture on karst at the Franco Anelli Speleological Museum. Two precious days to discover and learn about the fascinating world of speleology under the guidance of true experts and passionate professionals.
