Thursday January 23 2020 Grotte di Castellana srl, under the patronage of the Municipality of Castellana Grotte, will celebrate the 82nd anniversary of the discovery of the Castellana Caves, a karst complex that attracts numerous visitors every year, placing it among the main tourist attractions in Puglia.
Two events are scheduled throughout the day to celebrate this important anniversary, take stock of 2019's activities, and define guidelines for the coming year.
At 11:00 in the Grave, the first and largest cave in the underground system of the Castellana Caves, the Holy Mass officiated by Don Antonio Napoletano, parish priest of the Church of the Savior, which, as per tradition, will be attended by regional and local institutions and authorities and a representation of the school children of Castellana Grotte. This will be followed by the celebratory descent from the mouth of the Grave by the Puglia Grotte Group, to relive the exploratory feat of the Prof. Franco Anelli January 23, 1938. At the end of the morning, a floral tribute will be placed near the bust in honor of Professor Anelli.
The second moment of the anniversary will be hosted in the Hall of Ceremonies of the town hall of Castellana Grotte, when at 18:00 pm a public conference will be held in which the mayor of Castellana Grotte will speak. Francesco De Ruvo, the councilor for tourism John Philomena and the Board of Directors of Grotte di Castellana srl composed of the president Victor Casulli, from the vice president Francesco Manghisi and the councilor Maria Lacasella.
