We remember that January 23, 1938 that changed the history of Castellana
January 16, 2016, Castellana Grotte – On the morning of January 23, 1938, Professor Franco Anelli looked out over the edge of the Grave, followed by Vito Matarrese, to descend 70 meters deep, in total darkness, armed with a faint light and a lot of courage, finally finding himself before a scene of incomparable beauty.
The 79th anniversary of the discovery of the Castellana Caves, a Wonder of Puglia, will be celebrated as per tradition on January 23rd at 11:30 a.m. with a Holy Mass officiated this year by the Bishop of the Diocese of Conversano-Monopoli, His Excellency Giuseppe Favale. The evocative Eucharistic Celebration in the Caverna della Grave will be attended by Mayor Prof. Francesco Tricase, representing the Municipal Administration, the Board of Directors of Grotte di Castellana srl, led by President Domi Ciliberti, son of Franco Anelli, and a delegation of students from the Castellana Grotte Primary Schools.
At the end, a speleologist from the "Gruppo Puglia Grotte" will abseil down the mouth of the Grave to relive the thrill experienced by Professor Franco Anelli during that descent that changed the history of Castellana.
During the day, the Franco Anelli Museum will be open to visitors who wish to discover and learn more about the wonderful world of the Castellana Caves with the help of scientific and photographic materials.
This evening, at 7:00 PM, in the Town Hall's Ceremonial Hall, the Municipality of Castellana Grotte and the Castellana Caves will sponsor the presentation of the book "History of the Castellana Caves Personnel from Discovery to the Present Day. More than Seventy Years of History of the Castellana Caves (1938-2015)," edited by Francesco Tinelli, in the Ceremonial Hall. Speakers will include the author, Mayor Professor Francesco Tricase, President of the Castellana Caves Society Domi Ciliberti, and local historian Domenico Bulzacchelli.
