Mass in Grave, a commemorative descent by speleologists from the Puglia Grotte Group, and a photography exhibition by Mimmo Guglielmi celebrate the discovery of the Castellana karst site, a marvel of Puglia.
Castellana Grotte, January 15, 2015 – The next one will be celebrated January 23rd at 11:00 am In the Grave, the 77th anniversary of the day speleologist Franco Anelli, accompanied by Vito Matarrese, first descended into the "mysterious mouth" on the outskirts of Castellana, a place about which, until then, terrifying stories and fantastic legends had been woven and passed down. The profound darkness was faced and conquered by the two explorers who, armed with a faint light and a great deal of courage, found themselves before scenes of incomparable beauty.
In the presence of the Mayor Prof. Franco Tricase, of the Municipal Administration, of the Board of Directors of Grotte di Castellana Srl chaired by Domi Ciliberti, of the son of Franco Anelli and of all those who wish to intervene, Friday 23 January at 11.00 the Archpriest Don Leonardo Mastronardi will celebrate the Holy Mass to remember together a historic event that contributed to the socio-cultural change of our country, Italy and the world.
During the commemoration, some speleologists of the Puglia Caves Group They will recall the thrilling descent of the first explorers, abseiling down from the mouth of the Grave, which opens onto the Anelli square, for about seventy meters, until reaching what has been defined since 1938 as "the gateway to an enchanted world".
Following the celebration, the artist's photographic exhibition will be inaugurated at the Franco Anelli Museum Mimmo Guglielmi, a precious collection of completely new and fascinating images dedicated to the Castellana Caves, which enclose, in twenty-seven shots, the astonishing scenery of an underground world that continues to incessantly surprise and thrill.
