Holy Mass in the Grave to celebrate the discovery of the karst site, a marvel of Puglia
Castellana Grotte, January 20, 2014 – The 76th anniversary of the day speleologist Franco Anelli, accompanied by Vito Matarrese, first descended into the 'mysterious mouth' on the outskirts of Castellana, a place about which, until then, everything had been said and thought, will be celebrated in the Grave on January 23rd at 11:00 a.m.
The profound darkness was faced and conquered by the two explorers who, armed with a faint light and a great deal of courage, found themselves before scenes of incomparable beauty.
Since then, the Castellana Caves have taken on different appearances and colors, but have retained the same spectacular scenery for visitors, capable of arousing, each time, ever new emotions and truly unique sensations.
Over the years, various visiting options have been developed, culminating in the idea of replicating what the first two pioneers experienced: exploring in the dark, aided only by a light placed over the helmet. This idea materialized in the fascinating Speleonight tour, which has captivated hundreds of tourists with its innovative way of revealing truly unique views of the Castellana Caves, not visible during traditional tours.
In the presence of Mayor Prof. Franco Tricase, the Municipal Administration, the Board of Directors of Grotte Srl, Franco Anelli's son, and all those who wish to attend, on January 23rd at 11:00 a.m. Archpriest Don Leonardo Mastronardi will celebrate the Holy Mass to commemorate a historic event that contributed to the socio-cultural transformation of our country, Italy, and the world!
